Virgo: Star Signs and Sekhem

Virgo: Star Signs and Sekhem

3 min read

The stars are shifting. We're now in the season of Virgo (23rd August - 22nd September), and if the energy feels different to the fire and expansion of Leo season, that's because it is.

The Symbol and History of Virgo

Virgo is one of the oldest recognised constellations, revered by the Greeks as Demeter (or Persephone in some traditions) - the goddess of the harvest, of grain, and of the sacred cycle of growth and return. She is almost always depicted carrying a sheaf of wheat, representing abundance earned through patient, devoted labour. The brightest star in Virgo is Spica - a brilliant blue-white star that ancient navigators used to chart their course. Precision, even in the stars.

The symbol of Virgo (♍) is thought to represent the maiden herself, or in some interpretations the loops of the intestines - Virgo's ruling body part, and the seat of what we now call gut instinct. That quiet knowing. That inner signal that something is right, or isn't.

In Egyptian tradition, Virgo is associated with Isis in her role as healer and restorer - the one who gathered the scattered pieces and made something whole again. Methodical, devoted, and extraordinarily skilled.

Virgo represents:

  • Discernment and quiet precision
  • Healing through attention to detail
  • Service, craft, and mastery
  • The Earth energy of grounding and refinement
  • Ruled by Mercury (communication, clarity, the mind)
  • Tarot: The Hermit

During this season you may feel:

  • A pull toward sorting, clearing, and organising
  • A sharper inner critic than usual (Virgo's shadow - be gentle with yourself)
  • More analytical and methodical than emotional
  • A desire to refine rather than begin
  • Grounded, focused, and quietly purposeful

Earth energy recap

Virgo is an Earth sign, which means this season carries the steady, patient, protective energy of the Earth element. Go deeper on what that means over on The Earth Element blog.

The other day I felt utterly compelled to deep clean my house and office. "Not very spring time," I thought to myself - but as I work on this blog in my organised office, I realise the stars are always looking down on us, and just as the moon affects the tides, their energies can often govern our actions. For that, I'm grateful.

Working with Virgo energy on your altar

This is a beautiful season for a clean, intentional altar reset. Virgo's colours are earthy greens, warm whites, and deep golds - think harvest rather than fire. If you have the Empress or Ace of Pentacles art prints, now is the time to bring them forward. Both carry Virgo's Earth energy beautifully: the Empress as the embodiment of abundant, grounded creation; the Ace of Pentacles as the seed of something real, carefully tended.

And if your altar (or your desk) needs an anchor - our standout Virgo product is the Golem, Large: Earth. Handcrafted in Devon, moon-bathed, and charged with Sekhem energy, it's the most powerful Earth anchor in the collection.

A note on your own sign

If you're a Virgo, this is your season - but be mindful of tipping into over-analysis or rigidity. The gift of Virgo is precision; the shadow is the feeling that nothing is ever quite good enough.

If you're from an opposing elemental house (Fire signs especially - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), this season may feel like a sudden drop in altitude after the high-vibrational energy of August. That's normal. Trust your instincts, and don't mistake the quieter energy for stagnation. Coming back down to Earth after a Leo season like this one is not a step backward. It's integration.
